Sulfur for organic farming. Interest in organic farming has increased considerably in a short time. Why sulfur is recommended for use in organic farming
As mentioned above, organic agriculture does not prohibit the use of external resources to ensure the health of plants, but only limits them to natural substances and derivatives with low solubility; sulfur meets both requirements:
- It is a natural substance. It is found in nature and its application in crops does not require any previous process or chemical transformation. It only requires some treatment to modify its format and thus adapt to the consumer’s needs.
- It has low solubility. Thanks to this feature, its effectiveness is guaranteed, as it will remain in the soil for a stable period of time to continue exerting beneficial effects on plants and crops.
Therefore, the application of sulfur for organic farming is not only possible, but is recommended by international organizations for agricultural production with official organic certification: Regulation 889/2008 of the Council of the European Union on organic production and labeling of organic products.
What are the applications of sulfur in organic farming?
The applications of sulfur for organic farming are very diverse:
- Phytosanitary product. Sulfur is an excellent natural element to kill pests and diseases that damage “eco” crops.
- Fertilizer. Its duration is more stable than that of other types of products, thus favoring the plant’s nutrition process in an effective way.
- Floor conditioner. Without the need to go through any chemical process, it is able to correct soil deficiencies that prevent plants from developing properly.
